RELAXATION
Light to medium pressure

The goal of a relaxation massage is to improve circulation and generally relax your muscles. Using a light to medium touch, a relaxation massage aids in relieving stress and anxiety.

Choose this level of massage if you do not have a specific point on your body that needs to be worked on, but need a massage to give you an overall feeling of well-being.

The goal of a therapeutic massage is to resolve problem areas such as chronic pain, muscle tightness and soreness, and reduced range of motion. Each therapist will apply his or her own technique that is most beneficial to your body’s tissues and how your muscles are responding.

Choose this level of massage if you need relief from aches and pains, but also want it to be relaxing.

Descriptions

Swedish
Good for: stress/anxiety relief, those who only want light to medium pressure

Swedish massage techniques form the beginning basis of most massages. Your therapist will use long, gliding strokes along your muscles, kneading motions, and deep circular motions which will encourage blood flow.

Prenatal
Good for: stress relief, muscle tension and soreness

Tailored specifically to the needs of pregnant women and their changing bodies, prenatal massage serves to relax tense muscles, ease soreness and improve circulation and mobility. Your therapist will use pillows to position you comfortably on your side so you are completely supported throughout the massage. (After the first trimester, prenatal massage must be done in this way.)

Medical Massage
Good for: recovery

Medical massage is a general term used to describe a therapeutic massage prescribed by a physician. It can include various massage protocols and modalities. Medical massage is outcome-oriented, meaning that it focuses on improvement of specific areas of the body as prescribed by a physician, rather than simply filling the time allotted for the massage and working the entire body. Some Resolution therapists are especially trained in oncology massage (massage for people going through cancer treatments).

Active Engagement Technique (AET)
Good for: overuse injuries, chronic pain or tension, bulky muscles

Active Engagement (AE) Techniques integrate movement with other therapeutic techniques to give your therapist deeper access to your muscles. Your therapist will find and hold the area in your muscles that are restricted (tight, or lacking in blood flow). Then, he or she will move your joint through its natural range of motion. Consistent massage using this technique produces faster and longer-lasting results.

Myofascial Release
Good for: post-surgery, post-trauma, inflammation

Fascia is the connective tissue that surrounds every part of your body, from the muscle fibers to the bones. Trauma and swelling in your body restricts your fascia, causing pain and limited mobility. Myofascial release realigns the fascia using a gentle, but firm and slow pressure. Your therapist will look for fascial restrictions, or tightness, by gliding his or her hand along your skin, paying attention to blood flow, range of motion, and even the way your skin moves. Using little to no oils or creams, your therapist will work to realign your fascia. You may notice a slight pulling or burning feeling when the connective tissue releases and blood flow to the area improves, but this feeling goes away when the pressure is released.

Trigger Point Therapy/Neuromuscular
Good for: tension headaches, overuse injuries, muscle pain

If you have frequent headaches or pain that comes comes and goes and is difficult to pinpoint, trigger point therapy may be able to relieve your pain. A trigger point is a sensitive area in your muscle that, when pressed, will be felt in either that same place or another area. It is especially effective in treating back pain, muscle strain, tendonitis, headaches, TMJ disorders, and many other soft tissue problems. Your therapist will work on areas of hypersensitivity using his or her fingers, knuckles, or elbow to relax the muscle and restore blood flow.

Cranio-Sacral
Good for: whiplash, nervous system disorders, migraines, autism

CranioSacral Therapy is a gentle, hands-on approach for relieving tensions deep in the body by addressing the bones of the head, spinal column and sacrum. It is helpful for addressing migraines, headaches, fibromyalgia, scoliosis and many other conditions.

Sports
Good for: prevent or treat injury, workout recovery, prepare the body for athletic activity and maintain optimal condition

A sports massage is vigorous, but not deep. Your therapist will focus on areas of the body that are overused and stressed from repetitive and often aggressive movements. The goal of a sports massage is to bring blood flow to restricted muscles, but not relax the muscles so much that their effectiveness is limited the next day. It is especially good at targeting muscle-tendon junctions to give greater range of motion. CrossFit athletes, weightlifters, runners, bikers, IronMan competitors, high school or college athletes all benefit from sports massage.

Deep Tissue
Good for: athletes, chronic pain, muscle damage from injury

Deep tissue massage relieves severe tension in the muscle and fascia (connective tissue). Using slower, more forceful strokes, your therapist will target the deeper layers of your muscle and connective tissue. Deep tissue massage focuses on the muscles beneath the top surface muscles. Your therapist will ask you to give him or her feedback on how the massage feels.

You may feel a little sore for 24-48 hours after a deep tissue massage.

Hot Stone Massage
Good for: chronic pain, stress relief, muscle tension

Hot stone massage is a relaxing massage that allows the therapist to work deeper in your muscles without using much pressure. Smooth, flat stones are warmed and then placed on your body. Your therapist may also hold these stones in his or her hands while using varying strokes along your muscles.
